Lower Prospect Canal Progress
The Good News
Last week the Minister for Transport announced the approval to bring forward funding of the ‘missing link’ between the path along Old Prospect canal reserve and the paths inside new estate in Pemulway. This morning the surveyors pegs are up and work is under way! Not only will this new link give residents safe access to the western Sydney path network, it will also give cyclists passing by along the canal path access to a really good coffee shop. So ‘Thumbs Up’ to Holroyd Council for demanding the connection be built and taking the community demands straight to the Minister.
Aiming for Good News at the Boral crossing
However, further west near Prospect Reservoir, the State Govt have allowed Boral to bulldoze about 50 metres of the Canal path without providing the funds for a cycle/pedestrian bridge to span the gap that the road cutting will leave. Boral plan to build a ‘level crossing’ for cyclists at the bottom of a sharp incline to cross a 6 lane highway carrying as much traffic as the Cumberland Highway. A bridge should have been a mandatory part of the original design. Ninety million dollars spent on the road, and short a lousy $150,000 for an overpass. The cyclists of Sydney need to voice their disapproval, write to your local State member demanding the original path alignment be retained by building an overbridge.
